Organising an artist's portfolio website
Here are a few simple yet effective rules for graphic and plastic artists to follow when presenting their work in your portfolio website :
1. Sort your more recent work by themes.
2. Add subfolders for each main theme, grouping them by subject.
3. Display past work by year. Choose between showing a few samples or repeating the same hierarchy used for the recent work within the year's folder. Years' folders themselves are better presented in decreasing order.
4. Add a bio page, including information about yourself, your inspiration and process.
5. Don't include prices together with your work in the portfolio or a buy button. You'd better be represented by a gallery and link to them in your 'about' page. Low brow artists can keep a shop with prints and other artwork on their website, separated from their work presentation,
6. Include contact details in a page accessed by the main menu or at the bottom of the profile/about page.
"That is the usual artists do it and, in website design, your audience will have a better user experience if the navigation is presented as expected. This is the first step to be followed when organising your artist's portfolio website."
